Dublin
Dublin, the capital, is the largest city in the Republic of Ireland. Nearly one third of the country’s population live there.

Two languages
The Republic has two officIal languages, Irish and English.
The Emerald Isle
The climate is mild in Irland and it rains a lot, especally in the west. The grass grows very green in the warm, wet climate and so Ireland is often called ‘The Emerald Isle’.
Going to America
In the past, many Irish people left the country, looking for a better life elsewhere. Between 1841 and 1925, over five million people emigrated to the United States, were Irish-American descents live today. This gives Ireland a special link with the United States.
Religion
Over 90 percent of the people in the Republic are Roman Catholic. Northern Ireland is mainly Protestant.
The Troubles
When the Irish Republic was formed in 1949, Northern Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom The Catholic minority wanted to join the Republic but the Protestant majority opposed this.
Beautiful scenery
Ireland is famous for its beautiful scenery, especially in the west. The scenery there is a mixture of rugged rocks and cliffs, soft green valleys and quiet bays.

The Giant’s Causeway
Northern Ireland is a beautiful, green country with lots of lakes, rivers and mountains. The most most famous sight is the Giant’s Causeway on the north coast.

Kissing the Blarney Stone
Blarney Castle near the city of Cork is one of the popular tourist attractions that bring visitors and money to Ireland.

Irish music
Today traditional Irish music and dance are popular not only in Ireland but all over the world. So are many Irish pop groups and singers.
Irish sports
Soccer, the traditional Irish games of hurling and Gaelic football, golf, horse racing and fishing are some of the most popular sports in Ireland today.



Irish literature
Ireland has a long traditional off literature with many world-famous writers. Today, there are probably more novelists, poets and playwrights in Ireland, compared with the number of inhabitants, than in any other English-speaking country.
