The Troubles
When the Irish Republic was formed in 1949, Northern Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom. The Catholic minority wanted to join the Republic but the Protestant majority opposed this. Fighting broke out between the two groups in the late 1960s and violence has continued ever since. This is known as the Troubles.
