Ireland is a large island on the western edge of Europe. It is one island, but it´s not one country. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Southern Ireland, or the Republic of Ireland, is an independent country. The Irish name for Ireland is Eire.

Dublin
Dublin, the capital, is the largest city in the Republic of Ireland. Nearly one third of the country`s population live there.

Two languages
The Republic has two official languages, Irish and English.

Beautiful scenery
Ireland is famous for its beautiful scenery, especially in the west. The scenery there is a mixture of rugged rock and cliffs, soft green valleys and quiet bays.



Irish animals
The fauna of Ireland comprises all the animal species inhabiting the island of Ireland and its surrounding waters
The red deer is Ireland’s largest wild mammal and could be considered its national animal.

Irish music
Today traditional Irish music and dance are popular not only in Ireland but all over the world. So are many Irish pop groups and singers.

Soccer, the traditional Irish games of hurling and Gaelic football, golf, horse racing and fishing are some of the most popular sport in Ireland today.

Religion
Over 90 per cent of the people in the republic are Roman Catholic. Northern Ireland is mainly Protestant.

Emerald Isle is the poetic name for Ireland due to its green countryside.

The Giant`s Causeway
The Giant’s Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption.
