The female protagonist and Inman’s lover.

Inman –

The male protagonist. The novel follows Inman’s journey home from the slaughter he has witnessed in the Civil War.

Ruby Thewes –

an character whose loved and brave , Ruby is a foil to Ada.

Monroe –

Ada’s dead father and the old preacher of Cold Mountain.

Solomon Veasey –

A preacher whom Inman exposes for trying to murder his pregnant lover.

Stobrod Thewes –

Ruby’s father. Despite his drunk and disreputable past, Stobrod partially redeems himself through music.

Teague –

The leader of a band of the Home Guard, a local militia charged with rounding up the deserters.

Birch –

Teague’s young associate who kills Inman.

Junior –

Junior befriends Inman and Veasey before handing them over to the Home Guard.

Sara –

An eighteen-year-old widow who offers Inman food and shelter.
