It was built to defend the city from the incursions of the Barbary pirates. In 1806 it was made feasible the passage that connected it with the land. Until 1861 the guns were installed on the roof. During World War II it was used by the Navy as anti-aircraft.

It was restored in 1979. Was established in 1983 within the pre-history museum, now called Town Museum Tower of Ligny, with the ground floor and a prehistoric marine archaeological room. The Tower of Ligny is now proposed to visitors in his elegant robe of deputation tower, completely restored inside.
Collection The museum mainly exhibits artefacts recovered from the bottom of the Trapani coast. It also displays a collection of objects of prehistoric origin. The exhibitions are made up, on the whole, disparate findings such as helmets, amphorae, anchors and bolts of Greek ships, Roman and Punic, whose only common factor is the area of the finds. The museum, which was originally called Prehistoric Museum and the sea, is entrusted with managing the association Euploia.
