The first day starts with doing a little ceremony for welcoming the new year. the principle will greet the pupils and the teachers and wish for them a faithful and successful year. after that, every teacher will take her/ his pupils to the classroom, and there they will do some activities together and talk about their goals for the new year.

7

In our opinion, the first day of school should be interesting and colourful by decorating the school. Pupils get to know each other and the new teacher through activities and telling what they did in the summer vacation.

Teachers should give the student a positive feeling about the school especially to first-grade students, teachers can also give a small present for their pupils like a diary so they can write their goals and wishes for the new year.

Can the first page or two be used on the first day of school?

If so, can they be used as they are, if not, what can you do to change?

In our opinion, yes, the first two or few pages can be used on the first day of school.

First of all, this pages can help to achieve the teacher’s objectives for the first day, which is to start the first day by something nice and fun, and these two pages provide this because they include fun activities that give the pupils the opportunity to express themselves. In addition, the pages provide the pupils with good and enough information for the first day.

9

The topic of the two pages is about the hobbies that pupils can do in their free time. The teacher can do a combination of this topic and the summer vacation.

In addition to that,  using the first page or two is very useful because the language is a large set of words that enable the pupils to create new sentences to express themselves and their views and to communicate. So, it gives the pupils the opportunity to learn a new vocabulary and to use it in the correct format. And the repetition helps pupils to memorize the words.

To what extent do you think that the teaching of grammar at school helps pupils speak accurately?

Grammar is a very important branch of language, it is the structure of the language, the base of writing and talking in a correct way. Without grammar any language will not have any rules and it will be missy.

In regarding to teaching grammar at school in order to speak accurately, we have two opinions; in one hand, pupils can speak the language by acquiring it from different methods and without learning grammar. In the other hand, learning grammar helps the pupils to speak the language in a correct way, and they learn how to speak faster than just acquiring it.

Take a walk down memory lane, and tell us how you were taught grammar at school (as far as you remember).

As we remember, our English teacher was starting a grammar lesson by giving an example for the subject she/he wants to teach, after that she/he introduces the topic and teach the rules by giving an example for each rule, and at the end we have exercises to practice.

Being very excited, your colleague, at school tells you that she is teaching the Present Simple to her fifth-graders for the first time. Upon asking her about her method. she tells you that she is going to begin the lesson by telling her pupils that she is going to teach them about this tense and then move on to teach them about the form (affirmative, negative, interrogative), the use (habits & facts), and time expressions (adverbs of frequency and frequency phrases), while giving many examples to help them understand this tense. She asks for your opinion. What would you tell her.
