We think that we can use books on the first day of school, but it depends on the grade, topic, level of students, especially depending on the book itself. it also depends if the teacher is already familiar with students and their level of years before.
So, Can we use the first two pages in the book?
In our book “On Track”, belongs to junior high students and after a short review on the first few pages, we don’t recommend using the book on the first day of school for several reasons and they are:
- The first two pages are not suitable for teaching in the first two days at school because they don’t contain any introductory activity that can help us as teachers to get to know our pupils.
- When we directly start teaching in the book on the first day of school, the pupils won’t feel comfortable instead they may get upset and frighted.
- Using a textbook on the very first day of school doesn’t suit our expectations both as teachers and pupils. We expect the first day to be more enjoyable rather than diving right into the material.
- The first day should be dedicated to introductory activities such as introducing the pupils to each other and introducing the topic that they are going to learn throughout the year.
- The transition from the vacation to school should be smooth in order to prevent pupils from being intimidated. So accordingly the first day should include:

We would rather do:
- introductory activities between the teacher and the pupils. In case that the pupils are not familiar with each other.
- Introducing the background of the topic. It is preferable for the pupils to be aware of the historical background of the topic.
- The teacher can shortly relate to the topics that the pupils are going to learn in the upcoming lessons.
- Class discussion: what are the pupil’s expectations from English lessons, and why they think it’s important to learn English etc.
