Hey everyone! my name is Max Kelada and I’m working at the trade business. I traveled from San Francisco to Yokohama in Japan in order to look into the Japanese pearl business. I cant’ wait to tell you all about my journey!

You never know who you’re going to be put in with, so this is why I was so happy to share a cabin with my British companion. We were both from the UK and I’m all for the English people sticking together when we are abroad.

Me and my companion played patience in the smoking room and drank whisky and martini. We had a grate time and a lot to talk about. I felt like I have made a new friend!

I reserved a place at the dinner table for me and my companion. It was wonderful to meet the other passengers and it seemed that they were very interesting at my conversations. At our table there was a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay and i enjoyed talking with them.

Mrs. Ramsay was a very pretty little thing, with pleasant manners and a sense of humor. She was dressed always very simple, but she knew how to wear her clothes. She achieved an effect of quite distinction.

One evening at dinner the conversation by chance drifted to the subject of pearls (which is my job like I said earlier). I pointed at Mrs Ramsay’s necklace and said that They will never be able to get a culture pearl that an expert like me can’t tell with half an eye. I told to Mrs. Ramsay that the necklace she was wearing will never be worth a cent less than it is now. It seemed to be an expensive necklace.
Mrs. Ramsay in her modest way flushed a little and slipped the necklace inside her dress.

To my surprise, Mr. Ramsay said that Mrs. Ramsay bought that necklace in New York, for eighteen dollars. It can’t be true I said to myself and then said to Mr. Ramsay that it’s not only real, but it’s as fine a string for its size as I’ve ever seen. Mr. Ramsay and I bet on 100 dollar if it is a real necklace or not. I was certain in my opinion exactly as Mr. Ramsay was.

Mrs. Ramsay hesitated a moment. She put her hands to the clasp. “I can’t undo it,” she said. “Mr Kelada will just have to take my word for it.” I took out a magnifying glass from my pocket and closely examined it. Now I was sure- those pearls are real! I was about to speak, but then I caught sight of Mrs. Ramsay’s face. It was so white that she looked as though she were about to faint. She was staring at me with wide and terrified eyes. I understood that Mrs. Ramsay was lying to here husband, so I decided not to be involved and say that those pearls are not real…

Next morning, I got up, lay on my bed and smoked a cigarette. Suddenly my companion handed me an envelop with my name on it. I opened it and saw to my surprise 100 dollar bill. My face reddened. I understood it was Mrs. Ramsay…

“Do you mind just throwing them out of the porthole?” I asked my companion after tearing the envelope into little bits. No one likes being made to look a perfect damned fool am I right?
