Leonardo da Vinci had hundreds of drawings and summaries in his diary about aviation, and probably one of his greatest passions was flying in the sky just like a bird. In fact, the model he worked on as “flying machine” was inspired by the structure of the bodies of birds and bats.
The design of Leonardo da Vinci included a pair of huge wings attached to a wooden frame, in which the pilot sits on his stomach while he controls the wings with handles. Unfortunately, da Vinci never built this machine, and even if he tried to build it, it would not have experienced great success. The machine had no engine, so it was not clear how it was supposed to disconnect from the earth and start its journey across the sky. Even if Leonardo da Vinci was pushing the machine from the edge of a cliff, the probability of returning safely and sound after the test flight was very low.
