This book is about the influential people from the state of Georgia. It will explain who the people are and why they are important to the state of Georgia. The people featured in this book are James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, Mary Musgrove, Sequoyah, Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King Jr., Juliette Gordon, and Jimmy Carter.

James Oglethorpe

James Oglethorpe was the founder of the state of Georgia. He named the colony of Georgia after King George II because that was the name of the King of England. He also did not stay in Georgia after he created it because he was a British Soldier. He is very influential because of his role in establishing the state of Georgia.

Tomochichi

Tomochichi was a member of the Yamacraw Native American tribe that he created. He was a peacemaker and a teacher. He wrote a treaty with James Oglethorpe to keep the peace between the Native Americans and the English. He also made a school for Native American children.

Mary Musgrove

Mary Musgrove helped Tomochichi communicate with Oglethorpe. Because of her, they would not have been able to talk to each other which would have caused tension between the Native Americans and the English. She was a very important person when it came to establishing the state of Georgia. She helped keep the peace between the two groups of people.

Sequoyah

Sequoyah was a member of the Cherokee Native American tribe. He created the Cherokee alphabet. No one liked his alphabet at first, but the leaders thought it was amazing! All he wanted was for the Cherokee tribe to reunite and become one group of people again.

Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was also a big person for the beginning of the civil rights movement that took place in the 1950’s. In the MLB, Jackie Robinson’s legacy is celebrated on April 15th every year.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a big person in the civil rights movement in the 1950’s. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted everyone to be equal and have equal rights. He gave the famous “I Have a Dream…” speech in Washington D.C. Instead of doing violent protests, he did peaceful and calm protests.

Juliette Gordon

Juliette Gordon was the creator and founder of the Girl Scouts of America. She believed that every girl in the nation should have great leadership skills and qualities. The Girl Scouts of America are still around to this day and they still teach girls great life skills and teach them to keep working hard.

Jimmy Carter

Jimmy Carter was the 39th president of the United States. He was president from 1977 to 1981. He helped create several departments in the government including the Department of Education. He also wanted to help and fight for human rights arounf the whole world.
