Who is Robin Hood?

Many years ago, a brave man called Robin Hood lived with his band of Merry [1]Men in Sherwood Forest near the town of Nottingham in England.

Though Robin was very loyal to King Richard the Lion-Hearted, the evil Sheriff [2]of Nottingham called him an outlaw [3]and used his power to try and catch him while the King was away.

The Sheriff was a greedy [4]man who used his power to steal land and money from the people in the town.

While Robin ran from him, he practiced and became very good at shooting with a bow and arrow. One day Robin heard of an archery [5]competition [6]in Nottingham.

He was so good at archery that he won the competition, and was given the prize by Maid [7]Marian, a woman he knew as a child and whom he loved very much. She whispered [8]in his ear that she knew who he was, and from that day Robin knew that she would always stay on his side and help him when she could.

Robin realized that the best way to escape [9]the sheriff was to trick him. The sheriff’s greatest love was money, so Robin became an outlaw who stole money from the rich and gave it to the poor. True, he was an outlaw, but he was a good man with a good heart and he wanted to help the poor people of Nottingham.

He and his Merry Men made a name for themselves stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, tricking the sheriff every time they could. The sheriff tried very hard to catch [10]Robin, but never could.

Finally, King Richard the Lion-Hearted returned, and Robin Hood and his Merry Men were thanked for helping the poor. The sheriff was banished [11]from Nottingham, and Robin Hood was free to marry Maid Marian. From then on, Nottingham was a much happier place.
