The Body

It was a summer day in the town Castle Rock.

Our heroes were smoking cigarettes, playing cards and looking at girly books in the tree house they have built.

Suddenly, Vern got into the tree house and asked:”Do you want to find a dead body?”

Gordie, Chris and Teddy were amazed and terrifying at the same time. All of them were thinking about the fame and the glory they will have when they will find the body.

Chris:”We will be famous!”

Teddy:”Everyone will see us as heroes!”

Gordie, Chris and Teddy wondered how Vern found out about the dead body. Vern said he heard that from his older brother, Bill when he talked to his friend Charlie. The two whispered about Ray Brower’s dead body they have found.

Ray Brower went a few days ago to pick wild fruit but didn’t come back. Bill and Charlie added they found it by a stolen car.

The boys were shocked and were silent for a second.

Then they decided to go on an adventure and find Ray Brower’s body!

The next day, the boys told their parents they were going to sleep at Vern’s in the next couple of days so they won’t worry of them. They decided to meet near the train tracks. On the way, Gordie and Chris met and started to imagine the moment they will find the body.

Then Chris pulled Gordie to the side of the street.

“You won’t believe what I got here” Chris whispered and took out the gun from the roll mat.

“Where did you get that?” Gordie asked in panic.

“My dad is too drunk to notice it’s gone.”

Gordie took the gun from Chris and pretended he was in a movie. Suddenly there was sound of explosion. Gordie shot a bullet. They both were  screaming in fear and ran away before someone will catch them.

The four met near the train tracks. Teddy said he knows the way to the place the dead body is. He added that they need to follow the train tracks to get to that place.

So they started walking, and walking, talking and singing. Afterwards, they had to cross a bridge. Chris and Teddy had  already crossed that bridge while Vern and Gordie were still on it.

Gordie turned his head because he heard a strange noise.

“Train!!!” the screamed. Vern and Gordie started running, the train couldn’t stop. They were running for their lives. At the end of the bridge, the train was too close to them. Gordie pulled Vern out of the bridge, they both fell on the dusty ground.

It was a miracle, no one got hurt. Teddy and Chris helped them get up and they continued walking.

After a night in the woods, the boys got up into a sunny, beautiful day. They hurry to get up and continued the journey after the dead body.

There were long hot hours of searching but then Vern looked out to the woods and saw pair of shoes. The boys saw that too. So they went to see it. They moved some branches and leaves and there it was. The dead body of Ray Brower.

A car stopped near them. Bill, Charlie and two friends more got out from the car. Bill quickly realized that Vern heard him and Charlie then. One of the guys pulled out a knife and threatening Chris’ life to not tell the police about what happened. Teddy shout on that guy to leave Chris alone but he didn’t listened to him. Someone had to do something. Gordie took out the gun that Chris had and shot one bullet to the air. There was a silence for a moment. That guy and his friends left the place.

They decided that it will be the best to call the police anonymously and tell them about the body. They gave up about all the fame and glory they have dream about.

On the way home they barely spoke to each other. At the enter of Castle Rock they were standing, dirty and tired. At the end of the day, they were just 12 years old boys who looked for an exciting adventure.

Each one got to his home. The town and the boys had changed forever.

Vern was killed in a fire.

Teddy was killed in a car accident while drinking.

Chris has graduated school and went to university to learn law. But then, decided to end his life and got a knife into his throat.

And our hero of the story, Gordie, had become a writer.
