“Present simple – المضارع البسيط”

for 7th graders

In this unit the students will be able to:

1. to know the use of present simple.

2. to know the spelling rules of present simple.

3. to know the time expressions used in present simple.

4. differentiate between present simple and other tenses.

Present Simple – المضارع البسيط 

                         
                       The Use - الاستعمال
          We use the present simple to express habits or facts. 
        .نستعمل المضارع البسيط للتعبير عن عادات يومية او حقائق 

In order to know what is present simple, 
we need to know some
important things:
1. Time Expressions - تعابير زمنية
2. Spelling rules - قواعد الاملاء
3. Negative form - النفي
4. Question form - صيغة السؤال

Spelling rules (s,es,ies)

In order to transform the verb into “present simple” form we need to add to it one of these suffixes (اللملحقات) – (s,es,ies), but we only add them only if the subject is singular (مفرد) => He,She,It:

1. In general, we add “s” to the verb : 

** talk – talks  ,   work – works ,  play- plays

     2. We add “es” to the verb if it ends with (ss,sh.ch.o.x):

** wash – washes ,   watch- watches , fix – fixes

  3.We add to the verb "ies" if the verb ends with consenant + y, 
then we delete the "y" and add "ies":
 ** fly - flies ,  study - studies , dry - dries

Time expressions: 
1. every day/year/month/night
2.  on Sunday/April/ weekend
3.  daily 
  

Negative form – النفي 

In order to negate any sentence in “present simple” , we add the words “does not” or “do not” before the verb and we pay attention that the verb is written in its base form (بحالته الاصلية).

For example:

* He likes fish.

(-) He does not like fish.

* We like fish.

(-) We do not like fish.

He, she, it = does not     –   they, we ,you, I = do not

Question form – صيغة السؤال 

These questions are called “Yes-No questions”, in order to  make them , we add at the beginning of the sentence “Does” or “Do” and we transform the verb to its base form.

For example:

*He drinks water.

(?)Does he drink water?

*They drink water.

(?)Do they drink water?
