The principles of Amish are based on separation from the world and its customs and seclusion in the community and in the family, to the point of boycotting and ostracizing family members who do not conform. Its members live in closed, mostly agricultural communities. Despite all this, the Amish believes in the obligation to choose a religion voluntarily. The members of the community, upon reaching maturity, are required to undertake the religious obligation of choice after a period, which constitutes a sort of ceremony of transition. During this period – which lasts for several months or more – the young man who reaches adulthood is released from the laws of society and the church, and at the end of which he accepts the religious commandments and is baptized again. The Amish members espouse a modest lifestyle and generally refrain from using modern technology. In the transportation they still use a horse and cart instead of cars. The men grow a beard but shave their mustaches. As part of the principle of modesty, women do not wear jewelry.
