Chapter 3: Hercules and Ioleus Kill the Hydra
Hercules shouts to Ioleus “Come and help me!” he says: “Cut a branch from a tree and make a fire. I need a burning branch.”
Ioleus does this. Soon he takes a burning branch to Hercules. He cuts one of the Hydra’s heads from its body and burns the open neck. Now new heads cannot appear again.
Hercules cuts more heads from the Hydra’s body and burns all the open necks.
Soon the Hydra is dead. Ioleus and Hercules are happy.
“Thank you,” says Hercules “We killed the Hydra.”
Hercules puts his arrows in the Hydra’s poisonous mouths. Now he’s got poison arrows.
Ioleus and Hercules put the Hydra in the ground. The Hydra’s long necks become rivers under the ground. Ioleus and Hercules return to King Eurytheus. He is not happy. “The Hydra is dead. Hercules did not fail” he says.
“I must give Hercules another dangerous mission” the king thinks. This time, Hercules must die.”
