Comparison of adjectives (as….as ).

6

we can use the adjectives to compare nouns .

we use :

as + adjective + as

when we compare people , things , or events which are the same .

Examples : She is as tall as her mother

He was as quiet as a mouse

7

not as + adjective +as

when we compare people , things , or events which are different .

Examples : The boys are not as tall as their father

Ahmad is not as strong as his old brother

8

The rules

Adjectives with one syllable we just add ‘ er ‘ to the end .

small +er ……smaller

Note :    if the syllable adjective ends with ‘ e ‘ we just add ‘ r ‘

Nice +r…….nicer

9

The +  adjective + est

when we compare three or more people , objects , or events .

Example : Giraffes are the tallest of all the animals .

10

we add er or est to adjectives which have one syllable or which have two syllables and end in y.

11

spelling rules

when an adjective ends in e , we add only r or st

example : white , whiter, whitest

when an adjective ends in y , we usually change the y to i , and dd er or est

example :happy , happier, happiest

when an adjective ends in consonant – vowel – consonant , we double the last letter and add er or est

example : big , bigger , biggest

( we never double the letters w, x, y )

13

exceptions :

good  better  best

bad   worse  worst

14

we use :

more + adjective (than ) or less + adjective (than )

when we compare two people, objectives or events.

examples: your car is more expensive than mine

This lesson is less boring than yesterday’s  lesson

15

we use :

The most +adjective or the least  + adjective

when we compare three or more people , objects or events.

examples : She is the most helpless person in the world .

That was the least difficult exercise .

16
