The Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle is a book by Dan Senor and his brother-in-law Saul Singer that became a bestseller. The book branded Israel as a hotbed of start-up activity. According to Dan, “It’s a book about Israel that’s not for Jews.” So I asked a few Jews that are involved in the local high tech scene.
In the book, Senor and Singer discuss what they consider the two main factors for Israel’s start-up success. The first is the military and the second is the waves of immigration waves.
So I asked a group of high-tech enthusiasts to give their reasons for Israel’s success. This is what they came up with:
The army
Luck
Survival
Export mentality
huzpa
small place
courage
not taking ‘no’ for an answer
never apologize
tolerance for mistakes
Jewish DNA (need to be smart and entrepreneurial to avoid persecution and death)
Willing outcast immigrants
IP laws (inventions belong to the company where you’re working)
The 90s vision of Shuki Gleitman and others
Poor natural resources
multidirectional problem solving
we want to stand out
cheating
