A few hours later the lab results came. The blood on the knife matched to Jacob Ross’ blood and the scars on him proved that the knife was the murder weapon. The forensic medicine experts confirmed it. There was no fingerprints on the knife, appearently the murderer did their homework well.
When Detective Wilson went home that day, she just laid down on her bed thinking about the conversation he had with Todd Hayes. He was a weird man, maybe he wasn’t like that before. Some people change your life forever after all and there are no accidents in this world. A colleague of hers is going to talk to the wife tomorrow.
Next day she quickly found the officer that was talking to the victim’s wife. The officer started telling what they talked about while handing the updated files to Detective Wilson.

“I talked to the victim’s wife, Martha Ross. I learnt that she was with her parents the night her husband was killed she was seen in some security cameras. So she definitely was not at home that night.
Detective agreed with her and waited for her to keep talking.
“Anyways, I also talked to Alice, the woman he was having a fling with. She didn’t tell me much but I learned that she ended their relationship months ago. She was sick of being the other woman so she broke up with him and moved on.”
“Alright, now you’re just confusing me with all these tiny details, is there any  information that is useful?”
“I asked her what was she doing the night that he was killed, she told me she attended a wedding ceremony. The newly married couple filmed the whole thing and she’s there the whole time. With that being verified, we proved most of our suspects innocent.”

“With all the desire for vindication, Todd Hayes is our number 1 suspect. Unfortunately, we still do not have any proof and we can’t just assume that he’s the killer.”
“Of course we can’t but I trust my instincts combined with logical explanations. I say we keep an eye on him.”
Officer left the room and Detective Wilson decided to talk with Todd Hayes once again.
“Mr. Hayes, hello again.”
“Oh detective. missed me already?”
“Cut it off. I know it was you. You did it.”
“If you’re talking about Jacob Ross, I can assure you it wasn’t me.”
“Where were you the night that Jacob Ross was killed?”
“I was at the theater in the city center, watching a play.”
“What was the play?”
4
“I don’t remember it well, maybe it was something like ‘Our Life’?”
“Why are you lying, if you’re as innocent as you’re saying?”
“I’m not! Why do you think that I’m lying, detective?”
“Because you’re terrible at it. There was no play that night.  Everything comes full circle. You and Jacob Ross didn’t get along, you were rivals for a promotion, he caused you to get fired and you thought that your life was ruined, you were filled with desire for revenge. In order to have it, you broke into his house when his wife and kids weren’t at home, you were going to just kill him and leave while he was sleeping but in the dining room you broke one of the vases which caused him to wake up, he came downstairs to find the source of the sound, probably thinking it was a cat or something, but instead he found you with a knife on your hand…”

Detective Wilson took a deep breath, observing his reactions then continued.
“At first he tried to run away, but he failed, then he tried to fight back and struggled for a while, but in the end you stabbed him on his chest, he bled to death laying in the middle of the messy room. Now, tell me, was it worth it? Was your revenge worth being in prison for the rest of your life? Was it really that important to you?”
