In August 1964, Yoni returned to Israel and enlisted in the IDF. Yoni volunteered for the paratroopers and was assigned to the 890th Battalion.

In the battalion, Yoni underwent a training track as a fighter and participated in training and operational activities within the battalion and brigade.

Yoni completed an officers course with honors.

Jonathan was discharged from the IDF in January 1967 and received physics studies at Harvard University in the United States.

While waiting for the school year to begin, he was drafted into the reserves and fought in Sinai and was left injured in his shoulder after trying to help another wounded soldier. Yoni married his choice of the heart (Teresa Krasnoslavsky) and together the couple flew to Harvard University.

In 1972, Yoni was appointed deputy commander of the Sayeret Matkal.

Between the years 1972-1975, Yoni participated in a number of operations (“Crate”, “Aviv Youth”) and the Yom Kippur War.

Yoni, a man who put his country before his personal needs, knew during his military service to connect different ideas and abilities and bring them to successful action plans.

Similar to what we learned in class, the ability to connect the various boxes and produce a new box with new capabilities is what brought the feeling of being able to fly to a foreign country over four thousand km, occupy its airport and return with more than a hundred Israeli citizens captive to Israel.
