Preface by Atara Ofek:
Shalom! My father, the late Dr. Uriel Ofek – children’s author, poet and lyricist, well-known translator and researcher of children’s literature – passed away 34 years ago, and it is important for me to preserve his memory.
Prof. Mel Rosenberg, co-founder of the Ourboox website, generously offered me to collaborate with the site and initiate a Children’s stories competition in memory of my father, and even donated a prize on behalf of the site, for which I thank him.
I chose to dedicate the competition to stories that parents and children will write together about this strange year, 2020, which ends these days, to allow families with children (ages 15-4) an opportunity for creative quality time, along with observing and delving into the situation we live in – in the world, in our country, on the street, at home and especially in the minds of the children themselves. Eventually, once we get the submissions,, we hope to learn something from them as well.
Originally I intended that all the manuscripts would be handwritten, preferably of the child, and if they did not know how to write – that each would attach a drawing with the parent’s handwriting. To do this, of course, you have to scan the written and illustrated pages, and in retrospect I realize that this is a limitation that can be daunting. However, priority will be given to families who will upload their works in handwriting, preferably of the child.
