Five years had gone by. All of Dr. Mel’s characters were in trouble.

Samson, the friendly smell dragon, still loved ice cream, but he had lost a wing and couldn’t fly kids around town anymore.

Brian the bear had lost his upper jaw. He couldn’t grow a mustache.

And Phil the elephant was blue.

He had lost his tail.

Tim the porcupine still had his quills, but one paw had gone missing.

And Kenya the can’t garoo had done one headstand too many.

They asked Monty Saury what to do.

He said, “I’ll ask the tooth fairy. I have some repair issues of my own.”

But even the tooth fairy couldn’t lend a hand.

Then they all thought:

Dr. Cluck, Dr. Cluck,

We’re in luck with Dr. Cluck!!!

So they made an appointment to see the amazing rooster-doctor.

It was easy getting an appointment. There was lots of room in the waiting room.

But even Dr. Cluck was out of luck. Standing on his head was out of the question.

“Let’s all go see Dr. Mel,”

He wrote about us

Many years ago.

Perhaps he knows where

We should go.”

But Dr. Mel

Was not so well.

He said,

“Why don’t we go to see

The illustrator,

22

Miss Omri,

Perhaps she knows

Just what to do

To turn us back to

Something new.”

Here is the letter they wrote Miss Omri:

“Dear Miss Omri,

We hope this letter finds you well as well can be.

We know you are a very busy artist, but we hope you will read this. When you made us, we were colorful and supple. The years have gone by and we have become brittle and dull.

24

Should we just roll ourselves into one giant ball, or is there a chance that you can fix us up? We have so many stories to tell children, it would be such a shame.”

Will Miss come to the rescue and make us new? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
