“I realized that there is no need to take a life in order to live one”

I became vegan about 15 years ago, after joining my mom in one of her visits to the butcher shop during the preparations for the Rosh-Hashana feast. I’ve seen in front of my eyes, in a huge glass refrigerator, a whole head of a poor sheep that was placed there like a piece of furniture.
That was the moment I made the connection between what we eat and where it comes from. I was so shocked and couldn’t believe that the pink and soft pieces that I saw almost every day in my mom’s kitchen, which became the yummiest schnitzels in the world, were actually animals’ flesh.

My first thought after returning home was that there are so many different kinds of food. Therefore, why don’t we choose to have it in an alternative way that doesn’t harm the animals? I looked at my pets, who were my whole world, and I would do anything to protect them. At that moment, I realized how unfair I am to the animals that I eat because they aren’t mine, and don’t have anyone to protect them. I realized that there is no need to take a life in order to live one.
As an animal lover, I knew I couldn’t continue being an omnivore, so I decided to start consuming only plant-based foods and become vegan, as it’s called today.

So why should you give it a try?

First of all – it’s the best way to help and save animals:
Did you know that every vegan saves nearly 200 animals per year? There is simply no easier way to help animals and prevent suffering than by choosing plant-based foods over meat, eggs, and dairy products.
Moreover, being vegan is great for your health. According to many nutritional studies, vegans are less likely to develop heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure than carnivores are. Vegans get all the nutrients that they need to be healthy, such as plant protein, fiber, and minerals, without all the nasty stuff in meat that may slow you down and make you sick, such as cholesterol and saturated animal fat.

And if that’s not enough- eating meat doesn’t only hurt animals- it hurts people too. It takes tons of crops and water to raise farmed animals. In fact, it takes up to 6 kg of grain to produce less than 1 kg of animal flesh. All that plant food could be used much more efficiently if people just ate it directly. The more people turn to veganism, the better able we will be to feed the hungry!
