A Tale of Two Arcaffes

It was the best of times,

It was the worst of times.

I got a call from Zvika.

“Come quickly”, he said. So I came.

As it turned out, Zvika’s coffee house, named “Rinchi”, after his wife of the same name (well, nickname) was going bankrupt. That very morning.

The bailiffs were on their way to repossess everything in the place. Including my piano.

My piano had been in the coffeehouse for several  years. We had our weekly jazz gig every Sunday evening at Rinchi’s. Tamir, Laurent, Nati and me. Sometimes Katherine would sing with us.

The piano belonged to me. But according to Zvika, the bailiffs were determined to take everything. The tables, the chairs, the faucets. They did.

But I did get my piano out in time.

For some time, Rinchi’s was closed and empty. I was forlorn.

And then, the news. They were opening a branch of Arcaffe.

It became my home away from home.

But without our live music.

But I confess another love. The Ramat Hahayal branch of Arcaffe.

It is owned by Shimon Gershon, the famous soccer player. He is a very nice guy. Those songs that were written about him don’t do him justice at all.

He has become a singer and musician. He invites me to his gigs. I will go when he starts coming to mine.

When I have a few hours, I drive over, grab a place near the window.

Order my coffee and muesli (well granola, actually).

And dive into my writing.

There is some research that ambient noise of coffeehouses allows you to concentrate. That is research that I can believe.

Or takes care of my every need. She asked me to be in this book. I agreed.

Who wouldn’t?

Over the past years, the branch in Ramat Hahayal is where I often sit with my wife and kids. Many laughs and a few tears as well.

The branch in Ramat Aviv Gimmel is good for meetings that involve the brain.

But my heart belongs in Ramat Hahayal.
