Biography
Irena Sendler was born in Warsaw, Congress Poland (15 February 1910) and died at the age of 98 (12 May 2008). In addition, she was a female righteous gentile who saved 2,500 Jewish children. Moreover, Sendler is a Polish Catholic social worker, humanitarian, nurse, administrator, and educator.
Achievements
Irena was the recipient of many honors after the war but remained modest about her achievements. She was a righteous gentile who saved 2,500 Jewish children.
Sendler Won:
- The Order of the Smile(2007).
- Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta(1996).
- Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta(2001).
- The title of Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem(1965).
- The Order of the White Eagle(2003) which is the highest Polish civil decoration.
- The ‘Jan Karski Award For Valour and Compassion’(2003).
- Nominated by the Polish Government for the Nobel Peace Prize(2007).
- Became the head of Zegota’s children’s department of the Polish Underground.
Irena never sought attention or awards and, despite her great work, felt regret that there was not more she could have done.
